The medical profession has a long history of opposing alternative healing professions.

While always claiming public safety as its reason for the attacks, the true reasons often involve protecting their monopoly of the healthcare market.

Medicine's opposition to chiropractic was its strongest under the leadership of Morris Fishbein, Secretary of the American Medical Association from 1924 to 1949, who led a 50-year anti-chiropractic campaign in both professional publications and the public media.

Historical Antitrust Lawsuits Against Medical Societies

In 1975 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Goldfarb vs. the Virginia State Bar, that learned professions are not exempt from antitrust suits.

In 1982 the Court ruled that the FTC could enforce antitrust laws against medical societies.

These two suits paved the way for five chiropractors to file an anti-trust suit against the American Medical Association (AMA) and several other heath care agencies and societies in Federal District Court (known as the Wilkes Case).

Judge Susan Getzendanner found the AMA and others guilty of an illegal conspiracy against the chiropractic profession in September of 1987, ordering a permanent injunction against the AMA and forcing them to print the court's findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Even with success of the Wilkes Case and other anti-trust litigation, the AMA continues to this day to wage a campaign against chiropractic.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has maintained a decades-long battle against "alternative" healing traditions, dating back to the 1920s and arguably even earlier. The courts eventually ruled in favor of the chiropractors in 1987, finding the AMA guilty of a conspiracy to take down the chiropractic profession, as the above article recounts in detail.

But was this the end of it? Has the AMA resigned itself to the fact that chiropractic, as well as other forms of natural medicine, are here to stay? Not a chance.

The AMA's Bedfellows

Even with the success of the Wilkes Case, the AMA has continued to wage war against natural medicine for the past 20 years—but in more covert ways. It's the "Cold War" phase of this battle, but every bit as fierce. And now the AMA has rallied up a few significant allies, including:

•The American Dental Association (ADA)
•The American Cancer Society (ACS)
•The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and
•The American Psychiatric Association (APA)

… not to mention governmental regulatory agencies; all willing to march toward a common goal—a monopoly on medical care in this country. Together, they form a formidable lobbying force that controls just about every regulatory and legislative body in America. The truth is that chiropractic, naturopathic, and osteopathic medicine have PROVEN to be medically effective and cost effective for the patient, and the AMA can't stomach this, viewing natural medicine as a huge threat to their bottom line.

Federal Courts Rule AMA "Guilty as Charged"

In 1987, the federal courts found the AMA and several other medical groups guilty of seeking to create a healthcare monopoly. Specifically, they were found guilty of the following actions (published in the January 1988 issue of JAMA):

1.Systematic defamation of naturopathic, chiropractic, and osteopathic physicians

2.Publishing and distribution of propaganda specifically intended to ruin other healthcare professionals' reputations

3.Forcing MDs to refuse collaboration with naturopathic, chiropractic, and osteopathic physicians in the co-management of patients

4.Denying hospital access to naturopathic, chiropractic, and osteopathic physicians
The attack on osteopathic medicine has largely faded away since then, but chiropractic and naturopathic practitioners, as well as other legitimate natural medicine practitioners, continue to be the targets of suppression and misrepresentation. The war isn't over, but the rules of engagement have changed.

AMA Declares New War on Natural Medicine in 2006

In 2006, the AMA declared war on natural medicine by publicly stating on its website its intention to forcibly oppose licensure and practice of naturopathic physicians. Although they quickly removed this from their site, the following is a direct quote from that post, according to Naturopathy Digest:

"RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association work through its Board of Trustees to outline a policy opposing the licensure of naturopaths to practice medicine and report this policy to the House of Delegates no later than the 2006 Interim Meeting. (Directive to Take Action) Fiscal Note: Implement accordingly at estimated staff cost of $10,836."

Translation: Eliminate the competition.

According to The Integrator Blog, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) joined the battle with a statement that their goal was to "thwart the growing threat of expansion of scope of practice for allied health professionals" and included psychologists on the list of medical practitioners who needed to be "thwarted" (in addition to naturopaths, chiropractors, and midwives). The APA pledged their allegiance to the AMA in assisting them with "coordinating research to help medical specialty societies and state medical associations fight expansions in non-medical scope of practice, and improve information sharing among those groups."

Other medical associations have made similar pledges, such as the Minnesota Medical Association and the New York Academy of Family Physicians. They maintain that their position is based on concern for quality of care and patient safety, but the REAL agenda is just an attempt to destroy the competition.

As Chiropractor Louis Sportelli writes in his 2010 article in Dynamic Chiropractic:

"Just look around and you will see clear and compelling evidence that the long-standing war between the AMA and everyone else who does not come under the AMA umbrella is far from over. The names have changed, the venue has changed, but the intent has remained the same: to maintain monopolistic control over the delivery of health care."

Old Mission, New Tactics: AMA Learns How to Discriminate with Impunity

In 2010, the AMA House of Delegates introduced a resolution regarding scope of practice that contains limitations on who can be considered a legitimate physician, and who can medically diagnose. Specifically, the AMA's "Definition of a Physician" (H-405.969) contains the following language:

"The AMA affirms that a physician is an individual who has received a 'Doctor of Medicine' or a 'Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine' degree."

This is proof, without a doubt, that the AMA as well as individual state medical associations intend to continue doing everything they can to prevent you from accessing natural healthcare. Texas and Connecticut medical associations were the first to join the cause, and others will likely follow. Similarly, the AMA's "Comprehensive Physical Examination by Appropriate Practitioners" reads as follows:

"…the performance of comprehensive physical examinations to diagnose medical conditions [should be limited] to licensed MDs/DOs or those practitioners who are directly supervised by licensed MDs/DOs."

It's Not Just the AMA

Perhaps it's time to take a real look at medical associations, and the concern that they may be doing more harm than good. For groups who claim to exist in order to protect your health, they inevitably end up sabotaging it. It isn't just the AMA. Other medical associations that claim to exist for the betterment of public health include the following:

•American Dental Association (ADA): Continues to support the use of mercury fillings and demonizes biological dentists who oppose the use of mercury in dentistry; continues to support fluoridation, in spite of the evidence it does more harm than good.

•American Cancer Society (ACS): This charity has close ties to the mammography industry, the cancer drug industry, and the pesticide industry; has rampant conflicts of interest; consistently promotes drugs and screening procedures while ignoring environmental causes of cancer.

•National Cancer Institute (NCI): Has spent billions of taxpayer dollars promoting treatments while ignoring strategies for preventing cancer; abundant ties to the cancer drug industry (for more information, read Samuel Epstein's new book, National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society: Criminal Indifference to Cancer Prevention and Conflicts of Interest)

•American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP): Claiming to be protecting your children, the AAP is largely funded by vaccine manufacturers but refuses to disclose just how much money it gets from them; partners with Congress to protect pediatricians and drug companies from liability for vaccine injuries, while preventing you from getting truthful vaccine information.

Actions Speak Louder than Words

When someone's words differ from their actions, chances are that their actions more accurately reflect their values—and this is true for organizations, as well as individuals. Although medical associations claim to have your best interests at heart, their actions tell a different story. It's time to begin holding them accountable for their behavior and stop letting them hide behind the same old tired rhetoric.

You have a right to make your own choices about your healthcare, be it allopathic or naturopathic—whether you see an MD, an ND, or a DC should be YOUR decision and yours alone.

Scientific Study Validates Maintenance Adjustments

The Great American Dairy Myth:Learn How to Live Long and Stay Healthy Without the Cow!

I have long been a proponent of a non-dairy diet. My 4 children were raised that way and are healthier than most. My youngest two, ages 5 and 3, have never had dairy since birth, nor has their mother during their nursing. Both youngsters have less colds and sickness than any of their peers. I counsel my patients to avoid dairy at all costs.

So what’s the problem with dairy you may ask?

Cow’s milk and milk products are the most pervasive food allergy causing substances on the planet that are both easily obtained and widely used as foods. A protein in milk, casein, appears to be the major cause of adverse reactions. Casein is in milk of all forms, including lactose-free or low-lactose products. Casein is a very large and convoluted protein, and it is often mistaken for a foreign substance by our immune systems. And truly it is, because cow’s milk is meant for baby cows, not humans.
A human infant’s intestinal tract is designed to digest mother’s breast milk from birth to at least nine months of age, preferably to 12 months. Breast milk contains immune factors which protect against foreign substances. Breast milk contains three times the lactose, one third the calcium, a more absorbable form of iron, and higher amounts of essential fatty acids than cow's milk. Cow’s milk formula feeding prematurely exposes an infant's fragile intestine to cow's milk, and through a long series of maladaptive biological functions, the infant becomes sensitive (allergic) to that cow's milk.
Milk Allergy and Lactose Intolerance are not the same issue. Lactose intolerance means that the enzyme lactase is not produced by the body in sufficient quantity to digest lactose (milk sugar) resulting in gastric symptoms, such as cramping, gas, bloating and/or diarrhea. One can be lactose intolerant and yet ingest low-lactose, or lactose-free milk and dairy products without ill effects. Allergy to casein is another matter, and has nothing to do with lactose.

Why, then, is our American culture so hung up on cow’s milk? The problem is multi-factorial and has both cultural and economic roots. Milk and milk products are big business in America, and many in my generation were raised to believe that milk is an “essential food”; you can not live properly without it. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Many of us were raised at a time when the American Dairy Association touted dairy as “one of the 4 food groups”. Even today, dairy has it’s own section on the USDA Food Pyramid. In reality, we neither need dairy nor should we look at it as a separate or essential food category in our diet.

Two-thirds of the world’s population cannot tolerate milk and a rapidly growing number of Americans are allergic to cow's milk. In fact, cow's milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies. Many cultures never ingest milk products and are healthier than Americans by far. These cultures get much of their protein from legume sources and their calcium from legumes and vegetables.

One of the biggest untruths the American Dairy Association uses to promote cow’s milk as “essential” is that it is the only good source of dietary calcium. It’s time to debunk that myth as well. There are many excellent sources of calcium in other foods, such as dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, some fruits and figs. Many cultures that eat no dairy have better health and stronger bones by getting their calcium from fish, green vegetables, and legumes.

As far as protein: Yes, milk is high in protein, but at what cost? If casein is one of the most allergic proteins to humans, why ingest it at all? Soy and other legumes are much better alternatives. Even lean meats are. If you are not a vegan, sustainable fin fish that is low in mercury, like salmon and tilapia, are a fantastic source of calcium and protein.

Concerning soy products: Much misinformation was circulated in the recent past attempting to tarnish soy’s clean image. Don’t believe it! Cultures that have eaten soy and vegetable based diets are the healthiest on earth. Their people have greater longevity, lower cancer rates and lower rates of chronic illness. We, the great “milk” drinkers have lower levels of energy, greater obesity, and shorter life spans.

My suggestion to everyone is this: Eliminate dairy as much as possible. Eat more vegetables, fruits and whole foods. Eat more fiber and less fat, and never, never give babies milk to drink or cheese to eat. You will live happier, healthier and longer I promise you.

Healthcare vs Sickness Care: Changing the Paradigm

Even with our great wealth and scientific sophistication, we Americans are far from healthy. Why is it that we spend so much on healthcare and health insurance but we generally feel unhealthy?

First and foremost we need to define what "health" and "Healthy" really mean. The World Health Organization, (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in 1946 as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". Actually, that is close to my definition of health: "The optimization of and harmony between one's mental, physical and spiritual state of being". Health is not simply lack of symptoms or not feeling sick; it's much more.

Why is there a "Healthcare Crisis" in America? The main reason is that we have a system of "sickness care " rather than "Healthcare" as defined by the WHO. Instead of teaching our patients to be healthy, we have traditionally waited for them to get sick, then intervene. Hence, our system is not one of health maintenance, but sickness intervention.

We hear the term "Wellness" so much lately that it has tended to lose it's significance. It's become ubiquitous; sort of like "New and Improved" or "Organic". What does it really mean? What does it mean to be "Healthy" in America? Do we know anymore?

Consider this: The World Health Organization, (WHO), decided last year to categorize and rank the healthiest nations. The rankings were based on quantifiable measurements, like life expectancy, chronic illness rates, infant mortalitiy and morbitity, etc.
So how do you think the USA ranked? The country with the largest and most sophisticated healthcare delivery system on Earth. The country with the most and best doctors on Earth. The nation with the most access to the latest pharmaceuticals and finest hospitals. According to CBS, this country that spends more per person on "healthcare" than most nations spend per capita on everything!

Guess we should be #1, right? Or maybe #2....No? How about 10th? 20th? 30th? Try 37th healthiest! That is correct: There are 37 countries healthier than the greatest country on Earth! Maybe we did forget what "Health" really means.

Chiropractic physicians, like myself, were one of the first groups to advocate the concept of health maintenance instead of crisis intervention in healthcare. Chiropractic pioneers, like Dr. Forrest Shaklee who engineered the field of food supplement "Vitamins"; Dr. Carlton Fredricks, mutimedia pioneer and advocate of preventive nutrition, and Dr. Jack LaLanne, fitness guru and nutritional and health advocate, all embraced the concept of "keeping yourself healthy before you get sick" long before it was popular. All were chastized in their time as "health nuts" because of America's preoccupation with the "sickness care" paradigm.

Thankfully times are changing, due mostly to public education and the realization that our current system of "sickness care" is not working to keep us healthy. More people are concerned with their nutrition, doing some regular exercise, and seeing their healthcare providers for check-ups before they get sick. More healthcare providers, like internists, dentists and other medical professionals are educating their patients on how to stay healthy and avoid getting ill.

While I've never done this before, I'm going to summarize this article point by point (along with some comments) so that you get the full force of what's finally been put into print.

This information is so important that I encourage you to share the following summary I've put together. Email it to family, friends and coworkers. • There is extreme "cult-like" peer pressure put on doctors and researchers to swallow the vaccine mythology without question. Quoted from the story: Lisa Jackson, a physician and senior investigator with the Group Health Research Center, in Seattle, began wondering aloud to colleagues if maybe something was amiss with the estimate of 50 percent mortality reduction for people who get flu vaccine, the response she got sounded more like doctrine than science. "People told me, 'No good can come of [asking] this,'" she says. "'Potentially a lot of bad could happen' for me professionally by raising any criticism that might dissuade people from getting vaccinated, because of course, 'We know that vaccine works.' This was the prevailing wisdom." [In other words, don't dare question the vaccine, and don't ask tough scientific questions because the vaccine industry runs on dogma, not science... and if you ask any questions, you might find yourself out of a job...].

[Here's where the really good part begins...]

• Lisa Jackson was not deterred. She and three other researchers began to study the widely-quoted vaccine statistics in an attempt to identify this "healthy user effect," if any. They looked through eight years of medical data covering 72,000 people aged 65 or older and recorded who received flu shots and who didn't. Then they compared the death rates for all causes outside the flu season.

The vaccine made no difference in mortality
• What she found blows a hole right through the vaccination industry: She found that even outside the flu season, the death rate was 60 percent higher among those who did not get vaccines than among those who do. [In other words, even when you take the flu season completely out of the equation, elderly people who don't get vaccines have other lifestyle factors that makes them far more likely to die from lots of other causes.]

• She also found that this so-called "healthy user effect" explains the entire apparent benefit that continues to be attributed to vaccines. This finding demonstrates that the flu vaccine may not have any beneficial effect whatsoever in reducing mortality.

• How well done were these particular studies? Quoted from the story: Jackson's papers "are beautiful," says Lone Simonsen, who is a professor of global health at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., and an internationally recognized expert in influenza and vaccine epidemiology. "They are classic studies in epidemiology, they are so carefully done."

• Many pro-vaccine experts simply refused to believe the results of this study [because it conflicts with their existing belief in vaccine mythology]. The Journal of the American Medical Association refused to publish her research, even stating, "To accept these results would be to say that the earth is flat!" [Which just goes to show you how deeply ingrained the current vaccine mythology is in the minds of conventional medical practitioners. They simply cannot imagine that vaccines don't work, so they dismiss any evidence -- even GOOD evidence -- demonstrating that fact. This is what makes the vaccine industry a CULT rather than a science.]

• Jackson's papers were finally published in 2006, in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

[And here's the really, really juicy part you can't miss...]

Vaccine shortage proves it never worked in the first place
• The history of the flu vaccine reveals some huge gaps in current vaccination mythology, essentially proving they don't work:

• For example: In 2004, vaccine production was low and there was a shortage in vaccines (a 40 percent reduction in vaccinations). And yet mortality rates did not rise during the flu season. [Clearly, if vaccines actually worked, then a year when the vaccine wasn't even administered to 40% of the people who normally get it should have resulted in a huge and statistically significant increase in mortality. It should have spiked the death rates and filled the morgues... but it didn't. You know why? Because flu vaccines don't work in the first place.]

• In the history of flu vaccines, there were two years in which the formulated flu vaccine was a total mismatch to the widely-circulating influenza that made people sick. These years were 1968 and 1997. In both of these years, the vaccine was a completely mismatch for the circulating virus. In effect, nobody was vaccinated! [Knowing this, if the vaccine itself was effective at reducing death rates, then we should have once again seen a huge spike in the death rates during these two years, right? Seriously, if the vaccine reduces death rates by 50% as is claimed by vaccine manufacturers, then these two years in which the vaccine completely missed the mark should have seen huge spikes in the winter death rates, right? But what really happened was... nothing. Not a blip. Not a spike. Nothing. The death rates didn't rise at all.]

• If vaccines really worked to save lives, then the more people you vaccinate, the lower death rates you should see, right? But that's not the case. Back in 1989, only 15 percent of over-65 people got vaccinated against the flu. But today, thanks to the big vaccine push, over 65 percent are vaccinated. And yet, amazingly, death rates among the elderly have not gone down during the flu season. In fact, they've gone up!

• When vaccine promoters (and CDC officials) are challenged about the "50 percent mortality reduction" myth, they invoke dogmatic language and attack the messenger. They are simply not willing to consider the possibility that flu vaccines simply don't work.

• Scientists who question the vaccine mythology are routinely shunned by the medical establishment. Tom Jefferson from the Cochrane Collaboration is an epidemiologist who questions the claimed benefits of flu vaccines. "The reaction [against Jefferson] has been so dogmatic and even hysterical that you'd think he was advocating stealing babies" said a colleague (Majumdar).

• Jefferson is one of the world's best-informed researchers on the flu vaccine. He leads a team of researchers who have examined hundreds of vaccine studies. To quote directly from the article: The vast majority of the studies were deeply flawed, says Jefferson. "Rubbish is not a scientific term, but I think it's the term that applies [to these studies]."

[And here's the real kicker that demonstrates why flu vaccines are useless...]

Flu vaccines only "work" on people who don't need them
• Vaccines supposedly "work" by introducing a weakened viral strain that causes the immune system to respond by building influenza antibodies. However, as Jefferson points out, only healthy people produce a good antibody response to the vaccine. And yet it is precisely the unhealthy people -- the ones who have a poor immune response to the vaccine -- who are most at risk of being harmed or killed by influenza. But the vaccines don't work in them!

• [In other words -- get this -- flu vaccines only "work" in people who don't need them!]

• [At the same time, it's also accurate to say that vaccines don't work at all in the very people who theoretically could benefit from them. They only produce antibodies in people who already have such a strong immune response that they don't need the vaccine in the first place.]

• Jefferson has called for randomized, placebo-controlled studies of the vaccines. But vaccine pushers are resisting these clinical trials! They call the trials "unethical" [but, in reality, they know that a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study would reveal the complete failure of flu vaccines, and they will do anything to prevent such a trial from happening. Chemically induced convulsions

On Friday last week, Australia's Chief Medical Officer Jim Bishop warned doctors to stop giving the Fluvax seasonal influenza vaccine to children aged 5 and under until a cause for the reactions is discovered.

With the Southern Hemisphere heading into the winter season, both Australia and New Zealand have been vaccinating against the common cold since March.

Western Australia has seen the bulk of the cases, with 55 children aged 5 and younger suffering febrile convulsions after receiving the vaccination and 196 children also reportedly experiencing vomiting and fever.

New Zealand's Health Ministry confirmed that three children had also experienced febrile convulsions there.

The Fluvax vaccine contains two strains of seasonal flu and one strain of the H1N1 virus, with a spokeswoman from the Western Australian Department of Health confirming this is the first time the swine flu strain has been included in the vaccine.

Australia's Therapeutic Goods Association, which regulates therapeutic goods in the country, is now investigating whether the reactions in Western Australia relate to the vaccine itself, or the program delivery.

As part of their campaign to drum up support for the annual flu vaccine, it is common to hear about the 36,000 people who die every year from flu-related illness. But is this statistic even accurate? According to the CDC, there is no average number of people who die from the flu because the actual count varies significantly from year to year. Published in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC announcement explains that the actual death count from flu-related illness has been as low as 3,300 in some years, which is far lower than the statistics used in media talking points.

The vast majority of flu-related deaths occur in people over the age of 65. Typically it is not even the flu that kills them, but other illnesses that result at some point after having the flu. But this fact has not stopped the CDC from now recommending that every person over the age of six months get a flu vaccine.

But do flu vaccines even work in the first place? According to two reviews recently published by the Cochrane Foundation, flu vaccinations are not effective at preventing the flu. According to Dr. Tom Jefferson from the Cochrane Vaccines Field, flu vaccines "show only modest or no effect against influenza and hospitalization from pneumonia." He goes on to say in a podcast that "we have no reliable evidence on the effects of influenza vaccines on the elderly and health care workers who work with the elderly. What we do have evidence of is widespread manipulation of conclusions and spurious notoriety of the studies."

So in summary, all the hoopla over flu deaths and the need for a flu vaccine are grounded in junk science and faulty statistics.

Abstract

OBJECT: The overall incidence of complications or adverse events in spinal surgery is unknown. Both prospective and retrospective analyses have been performed, but the results have not been critically assessed. Procedures for different regions of the spine (cervical and thoracolumbar) and the incidence of complications for each have been reported but not compared. Authors of previous reports have concentrated on complications in terms of their incidence relevant to healthcare providers: medical versus surgical etiology and the relevance of perioperative complications to perioperative events. Few authors have assessed complication incidence from the patient's perspective. In this report the authors summarize the spine surgery complications literature and address the effect of study design on reported complication incidence.

METHODS: A systematic evidence-based review was completed to identify within the published literature complication rates in spinal surgery. The MEDLINE database was queried using the key words "spine surgery" and "complications." This initial search revealed more than 700 articles, which were further limited through an exclusion process. Each abstract was reviewed and papers were obtained. The authors gathered 105 relevant articles detailing 80 thoracolumbar and 25 cervical studies. Among the 105 articles were 84 retrospective studies and 21 prospective studies. The authors evaluated the study designs and compared cervical, thoracolumbar, prospective, and retrospective studies as well as the durations of follow-up for each study.

RESULTS: In the 105 articles reviewed, there were 79,471 patients with 13,067 reported complications for an overall complication incidence of 16.4% per patient. Complications were more common in thoracolumbar (17.8%) than cervical procedures

CONCLUSIONS:Retrospective reviews significantly underestimate the overall incidence of complications in spine surgery. This analysis is the first to critically assess differing complication incidences reported in prospective and retrospective cervical and thoracolumbar spine surgery studies.

Procedures: Sharp Rise in Complex Back Surgery Among Older Adults

The percentage of older adults undergoing a complicated fusion procedure for the painful lower-back condition called spinal stenosis has increased steeply, rising fifteenfold from 2002 to 2007, a new study reports.

Researchers said the increase was leading to higher Medicare costs and more life-threatening complications. They noted that although the overall rate of all types of surgery for spinal stenosis fell slightly during the five-year period, the proportion undergoing complex fusion increased to 19.9 per 100,000 Medicare beneficiaries, up from 1.3.

In the complex surgery, more than three vertebrae are fused and both the back and the front of the vertebrae are involved. Alternative procedures are decompression — removal of part of the bone pressing on the nerve — and simple fusion, in which two or three vertebrae are fused and only the front or the back of the vertebrae is involved.

The complex procedure costs almost four times as much as decompression and is associated with three times the rate of life-threatening complications, according to the study.

Earlier studies have not found that the complex surgery leads to better results or greater pain relief, said Dr. Richard A. Deyo, a professor of family and internal medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and the lead author of the study, published April 7 in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

WASHINGTON (May 24) -- Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A or its derivatives, according to an evaluation of those products released today.

AOL News also has learned through documents and interviews that the Food and Drug Administration has known of the potential danger for as long as a decade without alerting the public, which the FDA denies.

The study was released with Memorial Day weekend approaching. Store shelves throughout the country are already crammed with tubes, jars, bottles and spray cans of sunscreen.

The white goop, creams and ointments might prevent sunburn. But don't count on them to keep the ultraviolet light from destroying your skin cells and causing tumors and lesions, according to researchers at Environmental Working Group.

In their annual report to consumers on sunscreen, they say that only 39 of the 500 products they examined were considered safe and effective to use.

The report cites these problems with bogus sun protection factor (SPF) numbers:

-The use of the hormone-disrupting chemical oxybenzone, which penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream.

-Overstated claims about performance.

-The lack of needed regulations and oversight by the Food and Drug Administration.

But the most alarming disclosure in this year's report is the finding that vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol and retinyl palmitate, may speed up the cancer that sunscreen is used to prevent.

The industry includes vitamin A in its sunscreen formulations because it is an anti-oxidant that slows skin aging.

But the EWG researchers found the initial findings of an FDA study of vitamin A's photocarcinogenic properties, meaning the possibility that it results in cancerous tumors when used on skin exposed to sunlight.

"In that yearlong study, tumors and lesions developed up to 21 percent faster in lab animals coated in a vitamin A-laced cream than animals treated with a vitamin-free cream," the report said.

The conclusion came from EWG's analysis of initial findings released last fall by the FDA and the National Toxicology Program, the federal government's principle evaluator of substances that raise public health concerns.

EWG's conclusions were subsequently scrutinized by outside toxicologists.

Based on the strength of the findings by FDA's own scientists, many in the public health community say they can't believe nor understand why the agency hasn't already notified the public of the possible danger.

"There was enough evidence 10 years ago for FDA to caution consumers against the use of vitamin A in sunscreens," Jane Houlihan, EWG's senior vice president for research, told AOL News.

"FDA launched this one-year study, completed their research and now 10 years later, they say nothing about it, just silence."

On Friday, the FDA said the allegations are not true.

"We have thoroughly checked and are not aware of any studies," an FDA spokesperson told AOL News. She said she checked with bosses throughout the agency and found no one who knew of the vitamin A sunscreen research being done by or on behalf of the agency.

But documents from the FDA and the National Toxicology Program showed that the agency had done the research.

"Retinyl palmitate was selected by (FDA's) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition for photo-toxicity and photocarcinogenicity testing based on the increasingly widespread use of this compound in cosmetic retail products for use on sun-exposed skin," said an October 2000 report by the National Toxicology Program.

FDA's own website said the animal studies were done at its National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Ark. And it was scientists from the FDA center and National Toxicology Program who posted the study data last fall.

Vertebroplasty No Better Than Sham For Painful Osteoperotic Fractures

At least that's what the New England Journal Of Medicine is reporting. This randomized double blind, placebo controlled study took participants with one or two painful osteoperotic fractures unhealed and less than 12 months old by MRI and randomized them to either vertebroplasty or sham.

For the nonmedical types out there, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty involves the injection or balloon expansion of a compressed vertebrae, the theory being that this action will decrease the back pain associated with fractures. The only indication to have one, that I'm aware of, is to treat uncontrolled pain.

Interestingly, 5 years ago we didn't have such a procedure. Patients with compression fractures got pain meds and Miacalcin and told to wait it out. They were told that as the bone healed the pain would improve. We would use moist heat and ultrasound to hasten the healing, then soft tissue adjustments.

Today, just about every acute compression fracture with associated pain gets an MRI and then gets evaluated by either an interventional radiologist or an orthopedic spinal surgeon for evaluation for vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty.

In the study above the primary outcome being measure was pain. Using the primary outcome of pain at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months the study showed no difference between the treatment group and the sham (placebo) group.

This is huge. HUGE. Granted, the study was small, but it appears to be well designed.

This is the second clinical study showing that vertebroplasties are worthless. And the studies were performed by spinal surgeons themselves!

People believe that invasive means better. It's engrained in the American culture where you have to be a specialist that does something to be worth your time and money. Why get pain medication or chiropactic care when you can get needles and cement at 1000 times the cost..... that must work.

This study is a fascinating example of the power of special interest groups infiltrated into clinical medicine. Early studies indicated the vertobroplaties and kyphoplasties may have clinical benefit. The key word is "may". They get approved by the Medicare National Bank as showing benefit over placebo and then everything gets paid for at enourmous cost to the MNB.

I would like to know how these procedures ever made it into mainstream medicine without strong scientific evidence to its efficacy, especially considering their cost to the public Treasury. Chiropractors are constantly ridiculed as being "unscientific", yet we have more clinical studies that show what we do works than most surgical procedures do!

Situations like this tend to weaken the standards of Western medicine which are supposed to be science based, but are looking more and more like they are financial based. Get a bunch of device manufacturers to back a less than optimal study design, gain favor from the radiological and orthopedic societies, which have direct finanical interests in the matter, and spread your position statements out to the world. And make it the gold standard.

Medicine is killing us....and you are paying for it!

Drugs Are Not The Solution-They Are The Problem!

Every day Americans are subjected to a barrage of advertising by the pharmaceutical industry. Mixed in with the pitches for a particular drug—usually featuring beautiful people enjoying themselves in the great outdoors—is a more general message.

Boiled down to its essentials, it is this: “Yes, prescription drugs are expensive, but that shows how valuable they are. Besides, our research and development costs are enormous, and we need to cover them somehow. As ‘research-based’ companies, we turn out a steady stream of innovative medicines that lengthen life, enhance its quality, and avert more expensive medical care.

You are the beneficiaries of this ongoing achievement of the American free enterprise system, so be grateful, quit whining, and pay up.” More prosaically, what the industry is saying is that you get what you pay for.

Is any of this true? Well, the first part certainly is. Prescription drug costs are indeed high—and rising fast. Americans now spend a staggering $500 billion a year on prescription drugs, and that figure is growing at a rate of about 12 percent a year (down from a high of 18 percent in 1999).1 Drugs are the fastest-growing part of the health care bill—which itself is rising at an alarming rate. (And I don't mean the Obama Care Bill).

The increase in drug spending reflects, in almost equal parts, the facts that people are taking a lot more drugs than they used to, that those drugs are more likely to be expensive new ones instead of older, cheaper ones, and that the prices of the most heavily prescribed drugs are routinely jacked up, sometimes several times a year.

Over the past 3 decades the pharmaceutical industry has moved very far from its original high purpose of discovering and producing useful new drugs. Now primarily a marketing machine to sell drugs of dubious benefit, this industry uses its wealth and power to co-opt every institution that might stand in its way, including the US Congress, the FDA, academic medical centers, and the medical profession itself. (Most of its marketing efforts are focused on influencing doctors, since they must write the prescriptions.)

If prescription drugs were like ordinary consumer goods, all this might not matter very much. But drugs are different. People depend on them for their health and even their lives. In the words of Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), “It’s not like buying a car or tennis shoes or peanut butter.” People need to know that there are some checks and balances on this industry, so that its quest for profits doesn’t push every other consideration aside. But there aren’t such checks and balances.

Breast-feeding Could Save Lives and Money

A cost analysis published in the journal Pediatrics, estimates that the lives of 900 babies per year would be saved, along with billions of dollars, if 90 percent of U.S. women fed their babies breast milk for the first 6 months of life.

The findings suggests that there are hundreds of deaths and costly illnesses each year from health problems that breast feeding may help prevent. These include stomach viruses, ear infections, asthma, juvenile diabetes. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and even childhood leukemia.

Breast milk contains antibodies that help babies fight infections, and can affect insulin levels in the blood, which may make breast-fed babies less likely to develop diabetes and obesity.

The analysis studied 10 common childhood illnesses, costs of treating those illnesses, including hospitalization, and the level of disease protection other studies have linked with breastfeeding. The $13 billion in estimated losses due to the low breast-feeding rate includes an economists' calculation partly based on lost potential lifetime wages - $10.56 million per death.

Soy may benefit breast cancer survivors, study says

Women with breast cancer who eat more soy are less likely to die or have a recurrence of cancer than women who eat few or no soy products, according to a new study.

In the past, physicians have often warned breast cancer patients not to eat soy. The new research represents "a complete turnaround" from the previous understanding about the link between soy consumption and breast cancer, says Sally Scroggs, a registered dietician and senior health education specialist at M.D. Anderson's Cancer Prevention Center in Houston, Texas.

"We have gone from saying, 'No soy for breast cancer survivors' to, 'It's not going to hurt,'" Scroggs says. "Now it looks like we can say, 'It may help.'"

The study looked at more than 5,000 women in China who had undergone a mastectomy; they were followed for about four years. The women who consumed the most soy protein (about 15 grams or more a day) had a 29 percent lower risk of dying and a 32 percent decreased risk of breast cancer recurrence compared to the women who consumed less than about 5 grams of soy protein a day, according to the study, which appears in the December 9 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Department of Defense's Breast Cancer Research Program funded the study.

Women who ate between 9.5 and 15 grams of soy protein saw nearly the same decrease in risk as the women who ate more than 15 grams. In fact, the researchers found no additional benefits to eating more than 11 grams of soy protein a day. (An 8-ounce glass of soy milk and a cup of shelled edamame contain about 7 and 14 grams of soy protein, respectively.)

In all, 534 women had a breast cancer recurrence or died from breast cancer during the study period.

Soy foods--such as milk, tofu, and edamame--are rich in naturally occurring estrogens (especially isoflavones) that can mimic the effects of estrogen in the female body. Because the most common types of breast cancer depend on estrogen to grow, experts once feared that soy isoflavones could stimulate the estrogen receptors in breast-cancer cells, even though the estrogens in soy are much weaker than those produced by the body

The current study suggests the exact opposite: Soy may actually reduce the amount of estrogen that's available to the body.

"Soy isoflavones may compete with estrogens produced by the body. Soy isoflavones may also reduce the body's production of estrogen, and increase clearance of these hormones from the circulation--all of which together reduce the overall amount of estrogen in the body," says the lead author of the study, Dr. Xiao Ou Shu, M.D., Ph.D., a cancer epidemiologist at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Shu says, however, that factors beyond estrogen may be at work. Other components of soy foods, such as folate, protein, calcium, or fiber (or some combination thereof) may also be responsible for the health benefits reported in the study, she says.

More studies are needed to confirm these findings, especially as they apply to women with estrogen-sensitive breast cancer or those who take drugs such as tamoxifen to keep breast cancer at bay, say Ballard-Barbash and Neuhouser. Still, they say, "Patients with breast cancer can be assured that enjoying a soy latte or indulging in pad thai with tofu causes no harm, and when consumed in plentiful amounts may reduce risk of disease recurrence."

LONDON - The pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline says it has advised medical staff in Canada to not use one batch of swine flu vaccine for fear it may trigger life-threatening allergies.

Fox 5 News spoke with a GlaxoSmithKline official who says the batch is on a 'voluntary hold' and does not affect the United States.

Spokeswoman Gwenan White said Tuesday the company issued the advice after reports that one batch of the swine flu vaccine might have caused more allergic reactions than normal.

She says the affected batch contains 172,000 doses of the vaccine. She declined to say how many doses had been administered before the advice to stop using them was given.

White says GlaxoSmithKline wrote to Canadian healthcare professionals advising them to stop using the batch on Nov. 18. She says a total of 7.5 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed in Canada.

SWIN FLU VACCINE RECALL: Thousands of swine flu shots for children are recalled. I spoke with officials at the FDA and the Director of Immunizations at the CDC. Here's the deal-- this is not a safety issue. The issue is the vaccine's strength. Routine testing of the vaccines showed that the strength or potency of the vaccines had fallen slightly below required levels. The shots were made by Sanofi Pasteur and were distributed across the country including some in New York city and Nassau County.

All the doses are for kids-- aged 6 months to three years. What does this mean? Parents- if your child received the recalled vaccine, top health officials say nothing else needs to be done. The vaccine still works and kids who got it are still protected against the swine flu. Doctors who still have these recalled vaccines are being told to stop giving them. There is one important issue-- all the recalled vaccines were Thimerosol free. These are sought after by many parents who are concerned about links to autism. After this recall, there will be no Thimerosol- free vaccine option for kids under the age of two.

AG: Firm fleeced docs for $100M

Florida’s Attorney General’s office has filed suit against a Tampa firm that it says made and sold more than 1,000 pricey back-pain therapy machines to physicians nationwide through “false, deceptive or misleading advertising.” Most of the doctors were chiropractors.

Defendants are Axiom Worldwide, President and CEO James J. Gibson Jr. and Vice President Nicholas Exarhos. The complaint says they co-founded the company and both participated in unlawful sales practices.

Among other misleading statements, the complaint filed Nov. 19 in Hillsborough Circuit Court says, Axiom called its DRX 9000 spinal decompression system “the eighth wonder of the world.”

Atty. Gen. Bill McCollum seeks an injunction barring Axiom from continuing to market the machine under false pretenses and also seeks a court order forcing almost $100 million in repayment to consumers and the state – the amount that Axiom received for the machine in 2005 and ’06.

Gibson told Health News Florida this morning that he cannot comment on the suit because the company hasn't received it yet.

The DRX 9000 package that is at issue in the suit cost $95,000, or $125,000 if a neck attachment is included, the complaint says.

Among the false statements, the complaint says, were that Axiom had a patent on DRX 9000, that the system was “approved” by FDA, and that NASA engineers developed it through “space age technology.”

The chiropractors who bought the system were led to believe that Medicare and private insurers would cover the treatments, when the defendants knew claims were being denied, the complaint says.

Also, it says, Axiom falsely led doctors to believe there were scientific trials showing an 86 percent success rate for the DRX 9000 in treatment of degenerative disc disease, disc herniations, sciatica and post-surgical pain.

The price included materials the doctors could use in marketing the system to the public through brochures and ads. So far, the complaint says, 12 chiropractors who used the Axiom marketing materials have been accused of false advertising by the state health department.

The company’s Web site, https://axiomworldwide.com, was not in operation today, but a lot of information was available on a related site, www.AxiomPainSolutions.com.

There, the system was said to “provide relief of pain and symptoms associated with herniated discs, bulging or protruding …discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome, and sciatica.”

The site also offers videos of patient testimonials and a map of practitioners who use the DRX system. In Florida, there are 68 listed.

In July 2006, North American Medical Corp. sued Axiom for trademark infringement regarding DRX 9000, but Axiom kept making false claims, the attorney general’s complaint says.

Each day the media reports additional cases of H1N1 infections and rising death tolls attributed to the pandemic disease.

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL US:

In July of 2009, the World Health Organization issued a press release stating that it will no longer release the global table of H1N1 infections because it is “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to determine swine flu cases in laboratory testing. “Even in countries with limited laboratory capacities, WHO recommends that the initial virological assessment is followed by the testing of at least 10 samples per week in order to confirm that disease activity is due to the pandemic virus and to monitor changes in the virus that may be important for case management and vaccine development.”

The Centers for Disease Control issued a similar statement on October 2, 2009. “Influenza diagnosis will not distinguish between infection with seasonal influenza vs. infection with A-H1N1. Furthermore, it will not be confirming influenza infections with a diagnostic test, but rather, will rely upon the clinician’s judgement to determine flu infection if the patient presents with flu-like symptoms.”

The nasal spray vaccine by MedImmune has demonstrated evidence in clinical trials of shedding the live virus for 3-21 days post-vaccination. Vaccinating large populations, especially school children, with the live nasal-spray vaccine will cause a rise in the number of those infected.

HEALTHANGEL ASKS:

Then, how are health officials “confirming” and media outlets “reporting” the numbers of actual swine flu cases and swine flu-related deaths if they are no longer testing nor distinguishing between seasonal flu, swine flu, rhinovirus and pneumonia? And will these arbitrary and inflated figures then be used as statistics to drive future vaccination programs?

How can a public health initiative aimed at reducing the spread of H1N1 infections, engage in a vaccination program (administration by live-virus nasal spray) that has been clinically demonstrated to increase the actual rate of infection?

Less Mammograms: Less Overdiagnosis

Have We Harmed More Women than We Helped?

Women in their 40s should stop routinely having annual mammograms and older women should cut back to one scheduled exam every other year, an influential federal task force has concluded, challenging the use of one of the most common medical tests.

In its first re-evaluation of breast cancer screening since 2002, the panel that sets government policy on prevention recommended the radical change, citing evidence that the potential harm to women having annual exams beginning at age 40 outweighs the benefits.

"We're not saying women shouldn't get screened. Screening does save lives," said Diana Petitti, vice chairman of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which released the recommendations Monday in a paper being published in today's Annals of Internal Medicine. "But we are recommending against routine screening. There are important and serious negatives or harms that need to be considered carefully."

The task force's new guidelines, which also recommend against teaching women to do regular self-exams of their breasts and concludes that there is insufficient evidence to continue routine mammograms beyond age 74, immediately triggered intense debate.

Several patient advocacy groups and many breast cancer experts praised the shift, saying it represents a growing recognition that more testing, exams and treatment are not always beneficial and, in fact, can harm patients. Mammograms produce false-positive results in about 10 percent of cases, causing anxiety and often prompting women to undergo unnecessary follow-up tests, sometimes disfiguring biopsies and unneeded treatment, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Basis for guidelines

The new guidelines were based on a comprehensive analysis of the medical literature that included an update of a Swedish study involving 70,000 women, new results from a British trial involving more than 160,000 women and data from more than 600,000 women from the U.S. Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium.

In addition, the task force commissioned an unusual study funded by the National Cancer Institute that involved six independent teams of researchers conducting separate mathematical modeling studies of the risks and benefits of 20 different screening strategies.

While annual mammography for all women beginning at age 40 reduced the death rate from breast cancer by at least 15 percent, the modeling studies indicated that the added benefit of starting before age 50 was modest, the researchers concluded.

For every 1,000 women screened beginning at age 40, the modeling suggested that just 0.7 deaths from breast cancer would be prevented while 480 women would get a false-positive result and 33 more would undergo unnecessary biopsies.

"What isn't in the model but is an issue is how many extra imaging tests are done to follow up on things that turn out to be falsely positive and the harm of the anxiety that goes along with that," Petitti said. "Then there's the whole other line of problems that come into play, which is where there are some breast cancers detected that grow very slowly and would never have killed you."
Cutting back to biannual screening of women age 50 and older would maintain 81 percent of the benefits of screening annually while reducing by half the number of false positives, the computer modeling study estimated.

Teens find their highs in parents’ drug chest

After Special Agent Douglas Collier of the Drug Enforcement Administration spoke at a conference on the abuse of prescription drugs, a sobbing woman came to him and told of her daughter’s near death from an overdose of the painkiller fentanyl.

“She said to me, ‘Agent Collier, now I understand,’” Collier said. The woman said her daughter had never had a particularly close relationship with her grandmother, but started visiting regularly in the last months of the dying woman’s life when she was being heavily medicated.

During those visits, Collier said, the young girl was raiding her grandmother’s trove of powerful
painkillers and using the medication to get high. “And the access point for that was the medicine cabinet,” Collier said.

Each year, experts say, a growing number of teenagers quietly turn to a seemingly unlikely source to score drugs: their parents’ medicine cabinets.

We are bombarded every day with TV, internet, and print ads that espouse the benefits of all kinds of drugs; for stomach ache, headache, backahe, depression, fibromyalgia-from birth control to sleepiness to sleeplessness to erectile dysfunction-yup, there's a pill for that!

Gardasil & Swine Flu Vaccines: Inconvenient Truths

The summer of 2009 revealed two inconvenient truths about vaccination: first, the Gardasil vaccine is not as safe for girls as the government, medical organizations and Merck have said it is; 1 and second, the H1N1 influenza pandemic is not as serious as health officials are telling us it is. Which means that fast tracked swine flu vaccines children will get in schools this fall may end up being more risky than getting the flu.

Doctors Question Benefits & Merck Marketing Tactics

On August 19, the Journal of the American Medical Association published two important articles written by doctors questioning whether HPV vaccine benefits outweigh the risks of recommending it for all young girls. The intellectually honest doctors publicly criticized the aggressive marketing of Gardasil vaccine by Merck and certain Merck-funded U.S. medical organizations 5 and asked for more scientific evidence that universal HPV vaccination is necessary, safe and effective. 6

Bad Outcome Report After 1 In Every 1,855 Gardasil Shots

In the third article, written by government health officials, it was revealed that 1 in every 1,855 Gardasil shots is followed by a bad health outcome report to the government’s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System.

These bad health outcomes reported after Gardasil shots include lots of girls suddenly passing out and having seizures within minutes or hours of getting vaccinated and suffering head injuries and broken bones when they hit the floor. In fact, there is a larger than expected rate of girls passing out after getting Gardasil vaccine.

Girls Passing Out & Having Car Accidents

Back in 2007, the National Vaccine Information Center warned that many girls given Gardasil shots were losing consciousness within minutes or hours. 7 8 9 Some girls have left doctors offices and fallen unconscious while driving and had car accidents. 10 This brings up the little known fact that four girls who got Gardasil in Merck’s pre-licensure clinical trials died in car accidents. 11 How many of those girls suddenly collapsed while driving?

Clearly, Gardasil vaccine should be given while girls are lying down and they should be warned that sudden collapse can occur without warning within 24 hours of getting vaccinated.

Blood Clots Reports After Gardasil

What else did the recently published government study on Gardasil reveal? Well, we now know that there is a greater than expected rate of reported blood clots in girls who get the vaccine. Some blood clots can lead to pulmonary embolism or stroke, which means the blood clot ends up in the lung or in the brain. In fact four girls have died after they developed a blood clot that traveled to the lung after Gardasil vaccination.

Most Bad Outcome Reports Merck Files FDA Can’t Analyze

But the most shocking fact in this study is that, although nearly 70 percent of all Gardasil reaction reports were filed by Merck, a whopping 89 percent of the reports Merck did file were so incomplete there was not enough information for health officials to do a proper follow-up and review of what happened to the girls who fell unconscious or had convulsions, developed blood clots or inflammation of the brain and nerves, including Guillain Barre syndrome that causes paralysis, or those who suddenly developed serious autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and more.

There were 32 reports of Gardasil-related deaths between 2006 and the end of 2008 but only 20 of these death reports had enough information to be followed up. There are now a total of 43 deaths that have been reported. 12 How many of those Gardasil related deaths cannot be evaluated because of incomplete information?

1986 Law Requires Reporting of Vaccine Injuries & Deaths

This is an outrage. Under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, 13 it is a federal legal requirement for any person – a doctor, nurse or any person who gives a vaccination in America – to file a report with the federal government whenever a vaccination is followed by a bad health outcome, especially a hospitalization, injury or death. Vaccine providers are NOT supposed to be notifying the vaccine manufacturer – which clearly is like flushing the vaccine reaction report down the toilet – they are supposed to be notifying the government. And health officials at the FDA and CDC are supposed to be analyzing each and every report of a serious vaccine injury or death.

Massive Underreporting of Vaccine Bad Outcomes

FDA and CDC officials admit that there is underreporting of vaccine-related bad health outcomes. In fact, some studies say that less than 10 percent or even less than 1 percent of serious vaccine adverse events are ever reported. 14 15

Closed Government Databases Used to Deny Vaccine Risks

But health officials are quick to downplay the significance of this. They tell us not to worry because the closed government databases, which the CDC operates with vaccine manufacturers and HMO’s they pay to participate in them, can be relied upon to reassure us that all those seizures and blood clots and cases of brain inflammation, paralysis, lupus and deaths in girls who get Gardasil shots are really – mostly - just a coincidence.

In 2005, the National Vaccine Information Center and other parent groups called on the CDC and FDA to open up those closed government vaccine monitoring databases to public scrutiny. 16 17 So far, most of that vaccine reaction data is still hidden from public view so it can’t be independently verified.

Will H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine Risks Be Hidden From Public?

If the government can let vaccine manufacturers fast track Gardasil vaccine 18 but can’t compel the drug company that makes the vaccine or doctors giving the vaccine - who are shielded from liability 19 - to report each and every death and serious injury that follows vaccination, why should we believe anything government health officials tell us about the safety of vaccines?
Why should we believe that the experimental swine flu vaccines being fast tracked with only a few weeks of study in healthy children and adults 20 are going to be safe and that all vaccine reactions will be reported to the government and then properly followed up? 21

No Way To Monitor H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine Side Effects In Schools

It is far more likely that, when children get swine flu vaccine in schools and then get really sick or even die like the Gardasil girls, that all those bad health outcomes will be written off as a coincidence by health officials. That is, IF any reports are made to the government at all! Because few school nurses or other people giving children swine flu vaccines in the schools will be taking medical histories; or have a way to record vaccine information in children’s medical records, much less monitor children for signs of a vaccine reaction and then file a reaction report to the government.

This is not the way to run a national vaccine program. This is not what we expect from doctors in positions of authority who have accepted responsibility for protecting our individual health or the health of our nation.

Doctors & Drug Companies Shielded From Liability Ignoring the Law

In the early 1980’s, parents of DPT vaccine injured children worked very hard on getting informing, recording and reporting safety provisions of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. We wanted to make sure everything was being done to help prevent vaccine injuries and deaths. Little did we know then that those safety provisions would be blown off by doctors and vaccine manufacturers shielded from liability in that law. 22

The federal vaccine safety provisions should be codified into every state vaccine law with legal sanctions for doctors and drug companies who fail to file a complete vaccine reaction report.

What Public Health Emergency?

And now, today, we have swine flu vaccines that are being rushed to market 23 with even less testing that the fast tracked Gardasil vaccine had, with the justification that there is a public health emergency. 24 25 26 What public health emergency?

As everyone knows by now, the swine flu is no more serious than the garden variety influenza that goes around every year. 27Just like everyone knows by now that most cervical cancer can be prevented with regular Pap screening and that the very expensive HPV vaccine is questionable at best. 28

Why are we letting employees working for government agencies and pharmaceutical companies stampede us into taking vaccines that may not be necessary, safe or effective and – certainly - are not properly monitored for safety after they are given to tens of millions of children and adults?

It is time to demand that government officials and drug companies stop conducting national vaccine experiments on the American people.

I find it interesting....and alarming...that the FDA and our government spend so much time "saving" us from people who make claims that staying healthy to prevent infections ia better than "crisis treatment" of them. Read on!

Air "sterilizers." A photon machine. Supplement pills to boost the immune system. Protective shampoos and face masks. Even fake Tamiflu.

These and other products making bogus claims to prevent or treat swine flu are flooding the Internet as scam artists prey on the public's fears while the vaccine is delayed and real Tamiflu — made by Switzerland's Roche Group — is rationed.

Every problem, it would seem, is a sales opportunity. Some of the products appear to have been pitched for other emergencies, such as one called "Quake Kare" and masks and purifiers sold during the SARS scare.

Federal officials have sent warning letters to promoters of more than 140 swine flu-related products, including well-known alternative medicine advocate Dr. Andrew Weil for his "Immune Support Formula."

Really? Who, then, gets to send letters to the Big Pharma corporations that are making billions on the unnecessary and ineffective flu vaccines??

THE GREAT SWINE FLU "HOAX" of 2009...

Why is there never any reference made to the last swine flu "epidemic" 20 years ago in the US when 50 million people got the swine flu vaccine and more people died from the vaccine than the swine flu itself -- and that's not counting all those that developed permanent neurological damage.

Urgent and vital information you need to know about the massive amount of disinformation that the media has recently escalated as best demonstrated by 60 Minutes segment on Swine Flu which aired this past Sunday.

This past Sunday's 60 Minutes segment did ask some hard questions to the Assistant Surgeon General. However, what was missing is that they didn't ask why CDC officials persist in telling the public that this H1N1 strain of influenza is quite dangerous when the experience of those in the southern hemisphere, which just finished their flu season, is in direct conflict with what the CDC is telling the American people.

Overall 60 Minutes did a fairly good, objective piece of journalism that told the truth. They even pressured the Assistant Surgeon General about the vaccine's safety. On one hand, she's hitching her safety statements to the fact that the H1N1 vaccine is similar to seasonal influenza vaccine, and therefore "safe," even though she realistically CAN'T say that the new H1N1 swine flu vaccine is safe, or that it has been thoroughly tested because it only has been tested for a few weeks.

On the other hand CDC officials are screaming that H1N1 is so different from the seasonal influenza strains that have circulated in the past few decades that a national alarm must be sounded and everyone needs to be so afraid that we all should get vaccinated to prevent a deadly pandemic. This is completely inconsistent and irrational logic.

Come on CDC, you simply can't have it both ways.

Interestingly, the 60 minutes segment acknowledges that many people born before 1950 have antibodies to the new H1N1 influenza and are naturally protected.

WAKE UP AMERICA, this is before ANY vaccine was available!

If influenza vaccines are so effective, then why don't they work to protect people that have been getting their flu shots all these years?

(There is a new Canadian study that suggests those who have gotten seasonal influenza vaccines in the past may be at greater risk for getting H1N1 swine flu. This information reinforces NVIC's call for a comparison of the long term health outcomes of vaccinated and unvaccinated children).

The answer is, of course, that vaccines do not offer long term immunity. Natural immunity is what you gain when you recover from influenza and natural immunity is what is protecting older Americans, who have recovered from exposure to H1N1 strains of influenza in the past.

What is unknown is whether the massive amount of vaccine exposure in the US population has critically weakened people's ability to mount an effective immune response to novel infections like H1N1.

It was discouraging to see 60 Minutes end their segment on H1N1 influenza vaccine with an encouragement to go to their website to find out where to get a swine flu vaccination...

But HealthAngel, don't 36,000 people a year die from the Flu?? Don't we need to get vaccinated?? Bull puppies, I say!

Dr. David Rosenthal, Director of Harvard University's Health Services, brings clarity to this confusion:

Most of these so-called influenza deaths are in fact bacterial pneumonias -- not even viral pneumonias -- and secondary infections. Furthermore, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Academy shows that many of these deaths are a result of pneumonias acquired by patients taking stomach acid suppressing drugs.

So, for example, if we are to take the combined figure of influenza and pneumonia deaths during the flu season of 2001, and add a bit of spin to the figures, we are left believing that 62,034 people died from influenza.

The actual figures are 61,777 died from pneumonia and only 257 from influenza.

Even more amazing, in those 257 cases, only 18 were lab confirmed as positive for the influenza virus!

In my opinion, there's a vast difference between 257 deaths and 36,000 deaths from influenza..

The Best Treatment for Prostate Cancer is .............NO TREATMENT!!

In the largest analysis of its kind, new research pinpoints how long older men who are diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer can expect to live if they opt for a conservative, "watchful waiting" approach to their cancer treatment — as opposed to seeking immediate, aggressive therapies such as surgery and radiation.

Epidemiologists at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey examined national cancer-registry data involving 14,516 men over age 65 who were diagnosed with localized prostate cancer (that which has not spread beyond the prostate) from 1992 to 2002 and delayed surgery or radiation for at least six months after the diagnosis — the wait-and-see strategy commonly referred to as watchful waiting.

In the majority of these patients — those who were diagnosed with early-stage disease at a median age of 78 — the 10-year risk of cancer-related death was less than 10%.

Researchers also calculated the risk of death in a smaller group of watchful waiters who were diagnosed between ages 66 and 74, an age group for whom comparable data existed in past research. These patients' 10-year risk of death from prostate cancer was just 6% — a significant improvement over the risk in a similar group of men who were diagnosed from 1949 to 1992.

The new findings confirm what oncologists have long known, (and I HAVE BEEN TELLING MY PATIENTS FOR YEARS!!!) — that, in general, aggressive treatment for older prostate-cancer patients does not significantly improve survival. Indeed, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the 10-year survival rate for prostate-cancer patients over age 65 who pursue aggressive treatment (surgery, radiation or chemotherapy) is 97%, slightly higher than the survival rate of the 66-to-74-year-old patients in the current study who chose no treatment.

"Cancer is the scariest word in medicine for many patients. The first thought is, Oh, my God, I'm going to die. The next thought is, What can we do to get rid of this? But we've known for quite some time that many men — especially those in their advanced age — don't need aggressive therapies," says Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colorectal cancers at the ACS.

My analysis: Another case of the treatment being more likely to cause harm than the disease itself. Too many men rush into radiation and, even worse, radical surgey and find they are either incontinent or impotent or both! Now the scientists have finally caught up with me!

As demonstrated by the lack of effective protection against Swine Flu in this current pandemic by our previous mandatory vaccination, as well as the fact that THERE WERE FEWER CASES OF FLU DURING THE FLU VACCINE "SHORTAGE "2 YEAR'S AGO than during any previous year when there was plenty of vaccine available, consider the following:

The New Jersey Coalition for Vaccination Choice is a network of parents, physicians, holistic organizations and autism support groups, concerned with the lack of parental rights regarding health care, and the overwhelming number of mandated vaccinations.

We believe that vaccination choice and informed consent is a key ethical medical standard. It is crucial that the NJ legislature pass A260/S1071 (http://njvaccinationchoice.org/A260.pdf), The Conscientious Exemption to Mandatory Immunization. 19 other states already provide a similar exemption; parents in NJ also deserve this right.

In December 2007, the NJ Public Health Council, a group of eight volunteers, unelected, governor-appointed officials, including lawyers and dentists, voted to add four new vaccine mandates, beginning Sept. 2008. Shortly thereafter, this mandate was signed into law.

The four new mandatory shots are now added to the already crowded schedule of vaccines as a requirement to attend daycare or school in New Jersey.

NJ REQUIRES MORE SHOTS THAN ANY OTHER STATE.

The new mandates are as follows along with reasons to question their mandatory status:

1. Annual influenza shot for children 6 to 59 months

* Where are the studies comparing vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of administering annual flu shots to children as young as six months old?

* Seasonal reformulation of flu shots precludes any long term safety data. The CDC does comment each year, however, on the ineffectiveness of the vaccine because circulating strains don't match the vaccine. (CIDRAP News, Feb. 8, 2008, "CDC says influenza B flu strain doesn't match vaccine." AP Medical News, April 7, 2008, "CDC: Flu season worst in 4 years; vaccine didn't work well.")

* More than 90% of the flu shots given in the 2007-08 flu season contained high levels of thimerosal/mercury. [FluLaval (Glaxo-Smith Kline), Fluvirin (Novartis) and Fluzone (Sanofi Pasture) all contain 25 micrograms (mcg) of mercury per .5 ml dose. Fluarix (Glaxo-Smith Kline) contains trace amounts (less than 10 mcgs, however, mercury remains toxic even in miniscule amounts)]

* The amount of mercury in a typical pediatric dose of flu shot, which will be given each year, exceeds the safety limit established by the EPA for a 550 pound person. (EPA standard for "safe" mercury levels in the human body; point 1 (.1) microgram of mercury per 2.2 pounds of body weight.)

* The first time flu shot for anyone, including 6 month olds, is a double dose, 2 shots * Flu shots contain egg albumin and egg protein. There is potential for anaphylactic reaction if a child has an egg allergy, which is not commonly known at 6 months of age.

* According to package inserts for various influenza vaccines, No formulation of the flu vaccine has ever been tested for
1)carcinogenicity (ability to cause cancer),
2) Affect on reproductive capacity,
3) Safety in pregnant women and fetal harm,
4) Safety in children under 4 years of age

New Jersey is the first jurisdiction anywhere in the world to make flu shots and meningococcal shots compulsory. Many in this Coalition believe it is medically and scientifically irresponsible to mandate such vaccination.

Medical Errors - A Leading Cause of Death

The JOURNAL of the AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (JAMA) Vol 284, No 4, July 26th 2000 article written by Dr Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, shows that medical errors may be the third leading cause of death in the United States.

The report apparently shows there are 2,000 deaths/year from unnecessary surgery; 7000 deaths/year from medication errors in hospitals; 20,000 deaths/year from other errors in hospitals; 80,000 deaths/year from infections in hospitals; 106,000 deaths/year from non-error, adverse effects of medications - these total up to 225,000 deaths per year in the US from iatrogenic causes which ranks these deaths as the # 3 killer.

Iatrogenic is a term used when a patient dies as a direct result of treatments by a physician, whether it is from misdiagnosis of the ailment or from adverse drug reactions used to treat the illness. (drug reactions are the most common cause).

In the staid world of drug research, this is about as scandalous as it gets. The antipsychotic drug quetiapine, or Seroquel, is coming under fire.

As MedPage Today reports, damning e-mails from the past are resurfacing, implicating the drug maker for "burying" studies linking the drug to weight gain and diabetes.But here's where it gets juicy.AstraZeneca's former US medical director has admitted prior sexual relationships with both a researcher involved with the Seroquel studies, as well as with a ghost-writer who helped write journal articles involving the drug.

Psychiatrist Daniel Carlat comments further, and points to public court documents, which say the relationships with the women were "relevant and highly probative evidence of one high level AstraZeneca employee's determination to exploit his sexual relationships with these women in order to elevate Seroquel's status in the prescribing medical community through supposedly 'independent' publications of Seroquel safety and efficacy data .

Moreover, the mere existence of these relationships calls into question the integrity of the scientific work product of those involved. "Sex for positive drug spin? That's a first, and I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this scandal.

MRI Scans as Overtreatment for Breast Cancer

Yesterday, while scouring KevinMD, I stumbled across a post from “Respectful Insolence,” a blog authored by an academic surgeon/scientist who dubs himself “Orac.” In the post, Orac reports that this Wednesday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2008 Annual Meeting,researchers from the Mayo Clinic will be reporting on a disturbing correlation between the use of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a rise in the number of women having mastectomies.

In this context, Orac offers a cogent, compelling perspective on why too much cancer screening can harm patients. Orac’s worries specifically relate to using MRI scans to detect breast cancer. Advocates of the procedure rightly claim that MRI scans can detect more growths than other techniques, including mammography [i.e. an x-ray] and a clinical examination.

The MRI technology detects so much that, as the New York Times put it last year, the scans reveal “all sorts of suspicious growths in the breast, leading to many repeat scans and biopsies for things that turn out to be benign.”

In other words, breast MRI scans are so sensitive that if you have breast cancer, there’s an almost 100 percent chance that they’ll detect it; but the technology produces many false positives because it’s not as good at distinguishing between malignant and benign growths. As Orac puts it: “…MRI [scans] now routinely "section" people into "slices" much thinner than 1 cm, making our imaging sensitivity considerably higher than it was 14 years ago.

The problem is that while many people undergo malignant changes in various organs as they grow older than most will never actually develop “clinically apparent cancer.” In fact, some studies have shown that MRI scans accurately detect breast cancer just 30 percent of the time. Though most studies place this rate at a higher level, they also show that mammographies (using x-rays to examine the breast) lead to fewer false positives than MRI scans.

Man in Coma Has 'Miracle' Recovery
Wakes Up After Doctors Decided to Pull Plug

(Feb. 18) - A California man astounded his family and doctor alike when he awoke from a coma 96 hours after suffering a heart stoppage -- and just after the decision was made to take him off life support.

Mike Connolly, 56, , developed an arrhythmia on Jan. 31, California's North County Times reported. His heart stopped beating, and his wife, Loris, called 911.

Paramedics worked on Connolly for 35 minutes, performing CPR and shocking him with a defibrillator, before his heart re-started. Pulmonary physician Martin Nielsen told the North County Times that it's likely Connolly went without oxygen for at least 10 minutes -- which usually causes severe brain damage.

Doctors had deemed his condition hopeless, and his family decided to disconnect life support. Then he woke up.

"When we get a guy like Mike Connolly, it's almost like a miracle," pulmonary physician Martin Nielsen said. "I've never seen anybody come back like he has."

(Yeah-I bet they couldn't wait to get their greedy little hands on all those nice, fresh organs for expensive organ transplants! I bet the Docs are actually pissed-off! The perfect candidate....too bad they didn't get to the plug fast enough. Who is guarding YOUR plug??)

Some Asthma Drugs Too Risky, FDA Told

WASHINGTON (Dec. 11) - Government health advisers Thursday called for restrictions on some long-acting asthma drugs, but spared Advair, a top-selling medication used by millions of patients.

Outside experts advising the Food and Drug Administration recommended that Foradil and Serevent no longer be used for asthma. But they said the benefits of Advair and Symbicort clearly outweigh the risks.

All the medications contain an ingredient that relaxes muscles around stressed airways. But that may mask symptoms that can trigger life-threatening asthma attacks. Advair and Symbicort contain a second ingredient that reduces inflammation inside breathing passages and may help patients avoid such problems.

The FDA's own drug safety experts had recommended restrictions on all four drugs, including that none of them be used to treat asthmatic children. But the agency's respiratory specialists said the risks were manageable and no curbs were needed.

With its own experts deadlocked, the FDA called in an unusually large panel of 27 outside advisers. The medical and scientific experts said Advair and Symbicort should continue to be used with all patients, including children. The vote on Advair was 27-0; on Symbicort it was 26-0. On Foradil nine voted "yes" and 18 said "no," with a "no" vote meaning the risks were greater than the benefits. For Serevent the vote was 10-17.

The FDA usually follows the recommendations of its outside experts.
About 22 million people in the United States suffer from asthma, which claims nearly 3,600 lives. Children account for nearly one out of every three patients. An FDA analysis showed that the risks of long-acting asthma medications were greater in children.

The four medications contain a kind of drug called a long-acting beta agonist, or LABA. It relaxes the muscles around stressed airways to help patients breathe.

In recent years, millions of asthma patients have turned to the long-acting drugs to help them breathe more normally, allowing adults to get nights of uninterrupted sleep, and kids, for instance, to join a soccer team. Advair dominates the market, with almost 4 million patients.

But in rare cases, the drugs can increase the risk of serious asthma complications and send patients to the emergency room gasping for air.

Some experts believe that using a LABA alone can mask developing symptoms, and unexpectedly get patients in trouble. That's why treatment guidelines call for LABA medications to be used with a steroid. Asthma patients also carry a "rescue" inhaler for emergencies.

Bottom line: Unless it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, do not pump your body full of drugs, especially steroids, as they can kill you.

If you suffer from severe asthma, emergecy inhalers are far safer and more efffective than prophylactic steroids.

FLU VACCINE FOUND "INEFFECTIVE" by CDC

(WebMD) This year's flu shot was only 44% effective, a new study suggests - the least effective flu vaccine in a decade.

The findings come from a study of 616 Wisconsin residents who came down with flu-like illnesses during the peak of the flu season. Study findings appear in today's issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

In good years, flu vaccines are 70% to 90% effective in preventing confirmed cases of flu bad enough to cause a person to seek medical attention. This year's vaccine appears to be the least effective since the 1997-1998 flu season, when the vaccine was about 50% effective. Two of the 2007-2008 flu vaccine's three components didn't match most of the flu viruses circulating this flu season.

This season's predominant flu bugs have been the mismatched type A H3N2 and type B H3N2 strains. The H3/N2 component was only a partial mismatch, cutting the vaccine's effectiveness against type A flu to 58%. The type B flu component did not match at all - and the vaccine seems to have had no effect against this bug.

In a commentary on the studies in the same journal, Paul Glezen of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston pointed out that in spite of the leap in vaccination rates among older people from 30% to 67% between 1989 and 1997, "mortality and hospitalisation rates continued to increase rather than decline".

Yet, despite the fact that the flu vaccine is less than half effective when given, even for the proper strains of flu, we are sold a bill of goods that our children need the vaccine as preschoolers.

In all of 2007, only 6 children in the U.S. died of flu-related illnesses, and most had other additional life threatening illnesses to boot. Compare that to the 50,000,000 vaccines given and the possible side effects, it gives credence to the segment of society that believes flu vaccines in children are unnecessary, dangerous, and just another example where the drug companies are forcing public policy.

Four-month-old Gianna DiFiglia died only two days after being injected with four different vaccines at a routine doctor visit.

Thursday, her mother, Patricia DiFiglia of Hackettstown, stood on the State House steps with a picture of her daughter in the air, underlined by the words "Murder," protesting mandatory children vaccinations.

The issue has come to a head since New Jersey became the first in the nation to require annual flu shots for preschoolers last month. DiFiglia said she is scared to let her two other children get the mandatory shots, but the decision is difficult because schools mandate the vaccinations.
"I really want the choice without fail to be able to say no, especially with the flu shot," said DiFiglia, 41. "It's just ludicrous that they are mandating it in New Jersey."

DiFiglia was one parent in a passionate crowd of 200 adults and children rallying for the passage of a bill allowing for conscientious objection exemptions to mandatory vaccinations. Many in the crowd held up signs saying "Our Kids, Our Choice," or "Mother Knows Best."

Those opposing the mandatory vaccinations say parents should have ultimate say on what shots their children get and that chemicals in the vaccines can cause serious neurological disorders, such as autism.
Health officials strongly oppose such exemptions, saying they would open the door for widespread disease. They view vaccines as a great advancement in medicine that has eliminated diseases such as polio.
"Vaccines have really changed the face of medicine," said Lawrence Frenkel, a physician at the Children's Hospital at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick. "It has saved millions of lives and prevented countless epidemics of horrible, deadly disease."

New Jersey last month became the first state to require annual flu shots for preschoolers and approved three additional required vaccinations. All told, children need 11 disease-related vaccinations, some requiring multiple doses, to enter day care or preschool in the state, state Department of Health and Senior Services spokeswoman Marilyn Riley said.

While 19 states have conscientious-objection laws on the books, New Jersey currently allows for exemptions only for medical or religious reasons. A hearing on the proposal was held in June, but the bill still has not been acted upon.

HAND-TO-MOUTH DISEASE: The True Cause of Fatness

Yes, there is a direct correlation between putting food in your mouth and gaining weight!

No, folks, it's not an old wives's tale. There is an honest to God connection with eating and weight gain. If you go back a few posts and read my rant about people beginning to photosynthesize like plants, you'll understand my frustration and, thus, this current rant.

As a card carrying member of the National Weight Loss Registry , a food scientist, Nutrition Professor, and overall food expert, I feel comfortable with my analysis that eating too much contributes to fatness.

In my Weight Loss Classes at the Adult Schools in Summit, Chatham, Florham Park and Madison, (see my web site to register), I am constantly challenged by seemingly intelligent people that simply do not understand the "Hand-To-Mouth" theory of fatness. They seem to want a more complex reason as to why they simply can not maintain normal weight. "There must be some hormonal imbalance..."; "I am big-boned......"; "I eat too many carbs..."; "Dr. Phil said to love myself more...";

No, folks, the answer is simple: You suffer from "Hand-to-Mouth Disease". There is hope!! Try one of the following:

1. Close the mouth more often.

2. Restrict your hand to within 1 foot of the mouth.

3. Avoid bending the elbow.

4. Buy only the food that you dislike, and keep plenty of it around.

5. Only go to terrible restaurants with bad food.

If all else fails, hire a personal trainer and nutritionist. Then, join an expensive gym; join Jenny Craig; Zone Chefs, and buy all the hokey diet books you can carry.

Perhaps then you will not have enough money to buy too much food .

8-Year-Olds on Statins? A New Plan Quickly Bites Back

This aggressive new recommendation for warding off heart disease in some children has stirred a furious debate among pediatricians since the American Academy of Pediatrics issued it on Monday.

While some doctors applauded the idea, others were incredulous. In particular, these doctors called attention to a lack of evidence that the use of the cholesterol-lowering drugs, called statins, in children would prevent heart attacks later in life.

“What are the data that show this is helpful preventing heart attacks?” asked Dr. Darshak Sanghavi, a pediatric cardiologist and assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. “How many heart attacks do we hope to prevent this way? There’s no data regarding that.”
Nor, Dr. Sanghavi added, are there data on the possible side effects of taking statins for 40 or 50 years.

Other doctors said the recommendation would distract from common-sense changes in diet and exercise, which are also part of the new guidelines.

The Food and Drug Administration warned doctors Monday that prescribing a certain group of psychiatric drugs to seniors suffering from dementia can increase their risk of death.

Antipsychotic drugs are approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disease, but doctors frequently prescribe them to treat elderly patients with dementia. FDA's announcement was an update to a 2005 action, when regulators added warnings about increased heart attacks and pneumonia to drugs called atypical antipsychotics.

The medicines include blockbusters like Eli Lilly & Co.'s Zyprexa and Johnson & Johnson's Risperdal. FDA said Monday those same risks apply to 11 older drugs known as typical antipsychotics, including Pfizer's Navane and Endo Pharmaceutical's Moban. The drugs were developed in the 1950s and have largely been replaced by the newer medications, which are believed to have fewer side effects, such as tremors.

Under FDA's orders, both drug types will now carry boxed warnings — the most serious a drug can carry — describing their risks to dementia patients. Analysts did not expect the announcement to negatively impact drug company earnings because the original antipsychotics are available as low-cost generics.

Federal officials have repeatedly urged doctors not to medicate seniors unnecessarily. Despite such warnings, health professionals continue to prescribe psychiatric drugs "off-label," or for uses that have not been approved by FDA. About 20 percent of seniors in nursing homes who receive antipsychotics have not been diagnosed with psychiatric problems, according to data released by Medicare earlier this year.

While FDA regulates the approval and marketing of drugs, doctors are free to use their judgment when prescribing drugs. The agency based its decision on two studies of a combined 65,000 seniors which showed those taking antipsychotics were more likely to die than those not on the drugs. Agency officials said it's not clear why antipsychotics hasten death. Scientists also could not determine from the data whether one group carries greater dangers than the other."We've struggled with this decision but we ultimately decided the data are strong enough to expand this label to drugs in both classes," said Thomas Laughren, director of FDA's psychiatric drug division.

The agency stressed there is "no approved drug for the treatment of dementia-related psychosis," and recommended doctors consider other treatment options." A lot of the things can be done to help change one's environment so elderly patients can be more oriented and engaged," said Dr. Eric Hollander, a professor at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Many of the behavioral problems seen in seniors can be improved with simple, daily routines that patients can follow, Hollander said.

Don't Be Misled By Dairy Ads

According to a review of the published scientific literature, claims that low-fat dairy products or calcium can help people lose weight are untrue. Neither dairy products in general nor calcium intake promote weight loss.

Out of 49 clinical trials, 41 showed no effects of diary or calcium on weight, two showed an increase in body weight with a dairy regimen, and one showed a lower rate of weight gain. Only five showed weight loss.

An association between calcium or dairy intake and weight loss has been seen in some "observational" studies, possibly due to other factors such as increased exercise, cutting out high-calorie foods with little nutritional value, or other diet changes.

Where's the TOXIC MERCURY today?

MERCURY INJECTIONS FOR CHILDREN TO CONTINUE !!

Efforts on the political level to remove mercury from flu vaccinations for children are apparently again going by the wayside. Even though the US Senate and House of Representatives have passed a measure to remove this substance from vaccines, President Bush says the Bill removing it will receive his veto.

The item in question is the mercury-based preservative known as Thimerosal. This is drawing concern from groups involved in the protection of children who point to growing evidence that this element is a leading cause of autism and other severe neurological problems.

The flu vaccination continues to be manufactured with mercury and is recommended for all pregnant women, infants and children despite warnings dating back to 2001. At that time the Institute of Medicine recommended against exposing these same sensitive groups to vaccines containing Thimerosal.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, one in every six women of childbearing age in the United States already has blood levels of mercury high enough to cause neurological damage to their unborn children due to environmental factors alone.

The child protection group known as SafeMinds and members of the Autism community are outraged by the President’s announced intention to veto the bill, calling his decision both “irresponsible and dangerous.” (The Coalition for SafeMinds is a nonprofit group working to investigate and raise awareness of risks to infants and children from mercury injections.)

“Injecting even more mercury into the bodies of pregnant women, infants and children when it is not a necessary component of vaccines is just bad medicine,” said Lyn Redwood, president of SafeMinds. Redwood is the parent of a mercury-injected child.
“It defies logic that a flu vaccine must be disposed of as hazardous waste if it is not used, but somehow injecting the same mercury-containing vaccine into a baby is safe.”

Selling Sickness

You’re a publicly traded company. Analysts around the world monitor your stock. Your mandate is to produce a return on the investment made by millions of stockholders. If you fit this description and you manufacture and market drugs, you want as many “sick” people as possible.

If you sell blood pressure medicine, a way to sell more is to constantly lower the threshold of when someone has high blood pressure and supposedly “needs” your medication.

If you sell cholesterol-lowering drugs, you can sell more if you can lower the standard used to ascertain that someone has high cholesterol and has a cholesterol-lowering drug “shortage.”

If you sell medication to artificially alleviate the symptoms of poor digestion, you give it a name (how about acid reflux disease?) and hire a well-known celebrity (who doesn’t use the drug) to tout its benefits. And you sell more drugs. Stockholders are happy.

Many fall victim to the marketing trap set by these huge corporations. Think about it. Their profits come from selling drugs, not curing disease.
Turning more and more aspects of living, whether occasional depression, social anxiety, attention deficit or other symptoms, into a disease or medical condition sells more drugs. Wall Street knows that there’s a lot of money to be made by telling healthy people they’re sick.

You don’t have a drug shortage. Symptoms are merely signs something isn’t working correctly. What controls how your body works? Your nervous system, the true focus of chiropractic care. Save Me from Antibiotic Hell!!

As I write this this morning, millions upon millions of people are needlessly taking antibiotics for viral illnesses.

Now, mind you-I am definitely an antibiotic supporter. They have been life savers in many situations. Ever since I saw the movie in grade school on Lister's life and work, I was enthralled by the prospect that there was a time when the world knew nothing of "germs". Well, we know a lot more now, so why do MD's still allow their adult patients to take so many antibiotics when they know they are useless?

The American Academy of Pediatrics wised up many years ago when they realized that parents refused to leave Pediatrician's offices without a prescription for an antibiotic. They want eda pill to stop their kid's runny nose whether the doc thought it was needed or not. (Heck-isn't that what they were investing their time and hard earned money in to be there? WHERE'S MY KID'S DRUGS!!??).

They, The Academy, decided it was time to put a stop to this nonsense. They put out a policy paper that instructed Pediatricians not to give any more antibiotic prescriptions for non-bacterial illnesses-PERIOD!

Now, to the adults: If I see one more patient in my office who tells me: "Well, I went to my MD and he FINALLY gave me an antibiotic. As soon as I started to take it, I felt better!"...I think I am going to go bananas!

Don't you all understand? It is PSYCHOSOMATIC!! You feel better because you are making yourself feel better! You believe you feel better, so you do! It's called THE BODIES ABILITY TO HEAL ITSELF, and your psyche is finally giving in to it.

Consider this:

1. ALL colds, bronchitis, coughs, even the flu are caused by VIRUSES, not bacteria. ANTIBIOTICS ARE USELESS!

2. Studies in Europe have shown that taking antibiotics may actually reduce your immune system's ability to fight viruses. That's right! You are making the problem WORSE!

3. Over use of antibiotics by misinformed adults is producing strains of SUPER BUGS-Bacteria that we can not control. Consider the killer Staph infections lately...Toxic Shock....the return of Tuberculosis! All caused by YOU over using antibiotics.

What should you do when you feel a cold coming on? I have always believed that it is a depressed immune system, not the presence of the virus alone, that causes viral infections.

Feel the sniffles? Rest, eat well-stay regular with your chiropractic adjustments....and get some more rest. Your body will do the work...and heal itself.

Maybe Money makes the Drugs Go Round!

As I read further in today's newz, I see that the Vytorin debacle is a bigger problem for Merck and Schering than the "suicide phenomenon" with Singulair, (read last post).

It seems that stock holders are dropping the stock faster than Brad dropped Jen! It only goes to prove that money talks and Shinola walks. ( I never really saw Shinola, but I assume it looks like what I find at the bottom of my son's Baby Bjorn potty). Have to speak to Cramer about this one...Why would we be concerned with health when we have money?

Medicine is killing us. Slowly, methodically....

Suicidal Allergies!

Hey-Just when I thought it was safe to go outside and smell the flowers, I realized that I should kill myself first...

Wait a minute. Wait just a suicidal moment....Did I take Singulair?

Poor Merck & Co. Just after finalizing a class action suit against them for their Vioxx mess, coping with it's Vytorin failure, and preparing for the back lash from the Fosomax fall out, they are hit with this today: "The FDA Announces that it believes Merck's Singulair allergy medicine causes people to commit suicide!"

Now, I don't know about you, but I prefer seasonal allergy's itchy nose and watery eyes to DEATH! ( I am sure most women prefer having monthly periods instead of quarterly ones to cancer and death as well, but that's a matter for another post...)

Singulair, (which accounts for $4.3 billion in sales this year alone), is one of the most prescribed and highly marketed asthma and allergy drugs..we await the FDA's findings, but Merck has already included :"....suicidal thinking and behaviors..." to it's list of possible side effects on the label of Singulair.

Gee....and I thought constipation was bad! Yeesh...

As the title says, medicine's side effects are many times worse that the problem they are treating.

Why not try safe, effective, green and holistic Chiropractic instead? None of the patients kills themselves after an adjustment, I promise!

Food, Fat and You...

I am constantly amazed at the myriad lies people accept as truth when it comes to food, nutrition, and weight loss.

In my class on Monday, April 7, at the Adult School of Chatham, Madison and Florham Park, (theadultschool.org), I will try and dispel some of the rumors and misinformation concerning why people gain weight and have poor health due to what they eat.

The latest bunch of bunk concerns a study that showed that artificially sweetened soft drinks actually make you gain more weight. The conclusion was based on the flawed interpretation of the study. Yes, by fooling your brain into thinking you are eating sugar, your body will still crave the real sugar due to the fact that the artificial sweetener will not change your brain-blood sugar level even though it tastes sweet.

What they then jump to conclude is: Since you still want the real sugar, you end up having the sugary one anyway and now you drank 2 soft drinks: One with sugar and one with artificial sweetener.

I say this: If you drank water, seltzer, or an artificially sweetened beverage, you are still saving your body from the empty 150-400 calories. Period.

Remember: All of the studies that push you to take more drugs; eat more crap food; and pile on more sweets are financed by the people they serve. They are geared to drive you down the path of poor health and nutrition, and, apparently, they do their job well.

Why eat well and exercise, when you can do neither and just take drugs to mask the symptoms of poor health? Welcome to America!

Poor Dennis Quaid....

Last Sunday night, 60 Minutes aired the heart-wrenching story of how a hospital mistake almost caused the death of the Quaid's newly born twin daughters.

Dennis told the story of how the mix-up occurred: It seems as though the newborns were kept at the hospital overnight because of a possible staph infection--(a hospital favorite, BTW: both the iatrogenic staff infection and wanting to keep babies "for observation" in house over night). While there, the docs kept the babies on continuous IV anti-biotics. (Welcome home, new immune system!!). Since, of course, we wouldn't want the little one's IV tubes a cloggin' by the bodies natural defenses, they were given Heparin.

Here's where the fun really began! Instead of giving the newborn babies the usual dose of 10 units of Heparin each, they gave them the adult dose of 10,000 units each!! Needless to say, the babies bodies did not like that. They bled from every pore and opening: The umbilicus, noses, ears, eyes, etc. Blood spurted out to the walls!

When the Quaids showed up the next day, the infants were near death. And get this: The hospital didn't even call the parents!! And then the staff said "...well, it's a good thing they were in the hospital when this happened..."

What?? WHAT?!!

That's the reason they almost died, you idiots!!

The Quaids have started a foundation to make the public aware that medical mistakes are very prevalent. Too little, too late, I say. It's unfortunate that something has to happen to a celebrity before anyone notices or cares. Here are the facts:

More people die each year in the United States from medical errors than from highway accidents, breast cancer or AIDS, a federal advisory panel reported this year.

The report from the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine cited studies showing between 44,000 and 98,000 people die each year because of mistakes by medical professionals.
"That's probably an underestimate for two reasons," noted Dr. Donald Berwick of the Institute of Medicine.
"One is, there are many different kinds of errors we never learn about -- even in retrospective studies -- because they are never written down. And second, these studies did not include other areas of care like home care, nursing homes and ambulatory care centers," Berwick said.

The groundbreaking report urged Congress to create a National Center for Patient Safety within the Department of Health and Human Services to set goals for avoiding medical mistakes, track progress in meeting them and to fund research on better ways to prevent such errors.

Actually, most of these involve drugs. As the title ABOVE states: MEDICINE IS KILLING US!!

Our Drinking Water is Drugged!!

A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows

The presence of so many prescription drugs — and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen — in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health. In the course of a five-month inquiry, the AP discovered that drugs have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas — from Southern California to Northern New Jersey, from Detroit to Louisville, Ky.

How do the drugs get into the water?

People take pills. Their bodies absorb some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed down the toilet. The waste water is treated before it is discharged into reservoirs, rivers or lakes. Then, some of the water is cleansed again at drinking water treatment plants and piped to consumers.

But most treatments do not remove all drug residue.And while researchers do not yet understand the exact risks from decades of persistent exposure to random combinations of low levels of pharmaceuticals, recent studies — which have gone virtually unnoticed by the general public — have found alarming effects on human cells and wildlife.

Well, is this anything new to me? Of course not! We are so over medicated and drug-dependent, fed down our throat my drug ad men, MD's, and Big Pharma, that we are ACTUALLY URINATING DRUGS! Our water is filled with this pharmaceutical residue!

What to do? Drink bottled water! I, of course, recommend Moutainwood Spring water, as spring water is filtered at the aquifer, then treated again before we drink it, but it still contains most of the important minerals we need.

Vaccines and Autism...So Perfect Together

When I first became a physician, I, too, was already brainwashed by my previous education and mostly conservative medical background. I simply thought the "anti-vaccine" movement among chiropractors was composed of kooks and left-wing health nuts.

Then, I educated myself. In 1981, I myself became allergic to Thimerosol which used to be the preservative in Bausch & Lomb's Contact Lens products, like saline. After investigating, I found that Thimerosol was actually MERCURY!! Yes, Mercury-the extremely toxic heavy metal that accumulates over time in the body!! You never eliminate it!

Yes-That same metal that they recently took out of all thermometers; that kills the fish and we are supposed to not even smell the VAPORS of....

Can you believe it is used to PRESERVE VACCINES???? That we inject this extremely toxic heavy metal directly into the bodies of infants hundreds of times???

Big Pharma has always denied the Thimerosol is a problem, but consider these facts:

1. There is an almost direct correlation with the rise in autism to the rise in the number of required vaccines since the 1960's.

2. In populations that do not vaccinate, like the Amish, there are almost NO cases of autism!

3. Even though they continually denied it was a problem, Big Pharma has systematically and deliberately been removing Thimerosol from vaccines over the last few years with no explained reason or press about it. Hmmmmm....

4. Refer back a few posts. NJ requires more vaccines for infants than any state!!

And the flu vaccine has absolutely no preventative or protective effect against pneumonia.

And that's just one of the facts surrounding the flu shot you need to know. For example:

Does the flu shot protect against all strains of the flu? NO! Only 2 or 3 of 100's
Does the flu shot contain unsafe ingredients (like mercury and anti-freeze)? YES! It STILL contains Mercury in most cases

After I finished teaching my class on Weight Loss and Nutrition at the Summit Adult School last Thursday night, I heard another disturbing "scientific study" on the use of supplements on the radio.

Of course, the big drug companies hate that we are trying to keep ourselves healthy through diet, exercise, and chiropractic-they want us to stay sick and take drugs. So anything, like vitamins, that might help save your life become an "evil doer" in their eyes.

This study stated, "Research has shown....blah, blah, blah......that cancer risk can not be improved by supplements.....". Now, get this: "The study followed several 2-pack-a-day smokers over 3 years; some who took Vitamin A and others that did not. Their conclusion: Vitamin A did not prevent lung cancer in either group..."

What?? WHAT!!!???

That's like saying: "We took 2 groups of men. One group put on rain hats; the other did not. Then, we dropped both groups in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean from a Boeing 747 head-first. There was little difference in the wetness of either group's head after 3 years in the water. Our conclusion: Rain hats will not keep men's heads dry..."

Look, let's call a spade a spade. You can't stop a bullet with a breadboard on your chest, but I bet it would increase your chances of survival ever so slightly...that's what they were doing by taking Vitamin A. (Heck, if the study scientists had invested as much time into having the men actually QUIT SMOKING, who knows?).

No-don't take vitamins. Don't eat right. Don't exercise. But if your artificial heart kills more humans than it helps and you need a good paying job, Lipitor needs a new spokesperson-QUICK!

New Vaccines for infants??

Day 2 of our blog...

I am sitting here reeling from the news that my home state, good ole' over-taxed NJ, is the first state in the nation to require the flu vaccine for infants, along with Hep-B and a slew of other potent concoctions. They are trying for the HPV vaccine for infants, too!

Of course, I want my 1 week old infant protected from sexually transmitted diseases! God only knows what could be happening "behind the scenes" in those infant bars and clubs! You can never trust a nursery these days....

And, yes....so many infants die of HEP-B infections, (maybe 3 or 4 in all of 2001), which is also usually sexually transmitted, that we should subject 5,000,000 infants to the potentially dangerous vaccine!

Now mind you, that is beside the fact that most flu vaccines are still Thimerosol, (read that MERCURY), preserved.

Our First Blogging Day

Well , this is our first day of our new blog! I am going to concentrate on getting you healthy, as our motto is: "Your Better Health Is Our Only Concern"

As the title sugests, we should be the healthiest nation on Earth...but we are NOT. Why is that? Is it because we simply do not understand what makes us healthy and keeps us that way? Is it because we take too many drugs and don't eat well and exercise more? What do you think?
